    The Stichus of Plautus: An introduction and elementary commentary

    This dissertation is composed of two parts. The Introduction comprises sections on Comedy in general, on Plautus's life, on the metres and the manuscripts of his plays. With the exception of the section on the structure of the Stichus, it is a restatement of the situation as generally accepted by scholars today. The question of the structure of the Stichus is still a matter of contention, and the leading views on this subject have been discussed critically in this section.The Commentary is intended for the level of an undergraduate reader and comprises notes on grammar, syntax and general interpretation. The more detailed points concerning the metre are also discussed in the notes. The text used is W.M. Lindsay's edition (Oxford Classical Text), though in a few instances (notably at lines 63, 121, 365 , 529, 617) readings and emendations other than those which appear in the Oxford Classical Text have seemed preferable. <p

    EFFECTS OF FATIGUE ON MOVEMENT VARIABILITY DURING STRETCHSHORTENING CYCLE

    Although lower limb injury has been linked to fatigue, it is unknown whether movement variability may act as a protective mechanism, possibly reducing the risk of an athlete developing an overuse injury. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish the effects of fatigue on movement variability during the stretch-shortening cycle. Thirteen male athletes performed a submaximal stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) fatigue protocol, with three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic recorded for each participant’s lower limbs. When fatigued, athletes substantially increased their movement variability, whilst maintaining similar kinematics compared to when non-fatigued, suggesting that athletes with flexible motor behaviours and adaptability increase their movement variability when fatigued and, in turn, may decrease their risk of a developing an overuse injury

    Should there be a future for Tablet PCs in schools?

    Tablet PCs are a relatively new format of computer, which seem to offer features which may be beneficial to schools. The uptake of Tablet PCs by schools has been somewhat limited, not least due to their greater cost than laptops of a 'similar' specification. This paper explores the key question of the extent to which schools should be investing in Tablet PCs, if at all, in preference to other formats of fully functional PCs, drawing on evidence from a Becta funded evaluation of the use of Tablet PCs in schools in England conducted in 2004-2005. The Computer Practice Framework was used to develop a set of questions which helped structure a meta-analysis of the data from 12 case studies that formed part of this evaluation. The methodology used and some limitations of the evaluation are outlined, and the key findings are described. The paper concludes that Tablet PCs do appear to offer significant potential to schools, though this potential was not being fully realised in most of the case study schools. A number of specific circumstances in which Tablet PCs do appear to be the most cost effective option are also identified

    Approximate Analytical Solutions to the Initial Data Problem of Black Hole Binary Systems

    We present approximate analytical solutions to the Hamiltonian and momentum constraint equations, corresponding to systems composed of two black holes with arbitrary linear and angular momentum. The analytical nature of these initial data solutions makes them easier to implement in numerical evolutions than the traditional numerical approach of solving the elliptic equations derived from the Einstein constraints. Although in general the problem of setting up initial conditions for black hole binary simulations is complicated by the presence of singularities, we show that the methods presented in this work provide initial data with l1l_1 and ll_\infty norms of violation of the constraint equations falling below those of the truncation error (residual error due to discretization) present in finite difference codes for the range of grid resolutions currently used. Thus, these data sets are suitable for use in evolution codes. Detailed results are presented for the case of a head-on collision of two equal-mass M black holes with specific angular momentum 0.5M at an initial separation of 10M. A straightforward superposition method yields data adequate for resolutions of h=M/4h=M/4, and an "attenuated" superposition yields data usable to resolutions at least as fine as h=M/8h=M/8. In addition, the attenuated approximate data may be more tractable in a full (computational) exact solution to the initial value problem.Comment: 6 pages, 5 postscript figures.     Recurrence of Clostridium difficile infection in the Western Australian population

    Clostridium difficile, the most common cause of hospital-associated diarrhoea in developed countries, presents major public health challenges. The high clinical and economic burden from C. difficile infection (CDI) relates to the high frequency of recurrent infections caused by either the same or different strains of C. difficile. An interval of 8 weeks after index infection is commonly used to classify recurrent CDI episodes. We assessed strains of C. difficile in a sample of patients with recurrent CDI in Western Australia from October 2011 to July 2017. The performance of different intervals between initial and subsequent episodes of CDI was investigated. Of 4612 patients with CDI, 1471 (32%) were identified with recurrence. PCR ribotyping data were available for initial and recurrent episodes for 551 patients. Relapse (recurrence with same ribotype (RT) as index episode) was found in 350 (64%) patients and reinfection (recurrence with new RT) in 201 (36%) patients. Our analysis indicates that 8- and 20-week intervals failed to adequately distinguish reinfection from relapse. In addition, living in a non-metropolitan area modified the effect of age on the risk of relapse. Where molecular epidemiological data are not available, we suggest that applying an 8-week interval to define recurrent CDI requires more consideration

    Initial Data and Coordinates for Multiple Black Hole Systems

    We present here an alternative approach to data setting for spacetimes with multiple moving black holes generalizing the Kerr-Schild form for rotating or non-rotating single black holes to multiple moving holes. Because this scheme preserves the Kerr-Schild form near the holes, it selects out the behaviour of null rays near the holes, may simplify horizon tracking, and may prove useful in computational applications. For computational evolution, a discussion of coordinates (lapse function and shift vector) is given which preserves some of the properties of the single-hole Kerr-Schild form

    Unequal Mass Binary Black Hole Plunges and Gravitational Recoil

    We present results from fully nonlinear simulations of unequal mass binary black holes plunging from close separations well inside the innermost stable circular orbit with mass ratios q = M_1/M_2 = {1,0.85,0.78,0.55,0.32}, or equivalently, with reduced mass parameters η=M1M2/(M1+M2)2=0.25,0.248,0.246,0.229,0.183\eta=M_1M_2/(M_1+M_2)^2 = {0.25, 0.248, 0.246, 0.229, 0.183}. For each case, the initial binary orbital parameters are chosen from the Cook-Baumgarte equal-mass ISCO configuration. We show waveforms of the dominant l=2,3 modes and compute estimates of energy and angular momentum radiated. For the plunges from the close separations considered, we measure kick velocities from gravitational radiation recoil in the range 25-82 km/s. Due to the initial close separations our kick velocity estimates should be understood as a lower bound. The close configurations considered are also likely to contain significant eccentricities influencing the recoil velocity.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, to appear in "New Frontiers" special issue of CQ
